What you will need

Use the papers in this order.

  1. Before you start, the seller and the buyer collect these papers.

    Have ready:

    • The original registration certificate (RC) and the insurance certificate of the vehicle
    • ID proof and address proof of both the seller and the buyer
    • The chassis number and engine number, copied exactly from the RC
    • The sale price, and how and when it will be paid

  2. Make the sale agreement with your kit details, sign it and have two witnesses sign. It records the price, what is paid and the date and place of delivery, and the receipt and delivery note below record the handover.

  3. When the vehicle is handed over, make the sale receipt and delivery note with the amount received, the date, the odometer reading and the keys and papers handed over. Both sign it.

  4. The seller makes the affidavit with the kit details, to go with the RC transfer. Choose that you are the registered owner and the transferor, and have it sworn as the RTO's format asks.

  5. Only if there's a bank loan on the RC: ask the bank for its loan closure letter or NOC (you can use our letter as the format) and fill in Form 35, so the RTO removes the bank's name from the RC. Skip this step if there is no loan.

    Have ready:

    • The bank's loan closure letter or NOC, and the original RC

  6. Only if the vehicle is going to another state or another RTO: the seller applies for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) on Form 28 at the RTO that registered the vehicle. Skip this step if the buyer is under the same RTO.

  7. The seller fills in Form 29 (notice of transfer) in two copies, hands the RC and the insurance certificate to the buyer, and sends the form to the RTO.

  8. The buyer fills in Form 30 (application for transfer of ownership) and files it at the RTO with the papers it asks for, often online through Parivahan.
