Common questions
Why do I need rent receipts for HRA?
If your salary includes House Rent Allowance and you are in the old tax regime, part of it can be free of tax, but only for rent you really paid. A rent agreement shows what rent was due. A receipt shows you paid it, month by month. Your employer usually asks for receipts before giving you the benefit, and the tax department can ask for them later. In the new tax regime this HRA benefit is not available, but a receipt is still good proof that you paid.
When is the landlord’s PAN needed?
When the rent you pay in the year is more than ₹1,00,000, which is about ₹8,333 a month, your employer needs your landlord’s PAN for your HRA. Below that you can leave it out. If your landlord truly has no PAN, leave the box empty and ask for a signed declaration saying so, to give to your employer.
When is a revenue stamp needed?
When the rent is paid in cash and the receipt is for more than ₹5,000. A ₹1 revenue stamp goes on the receipt and the landlord signs across it (Article 53, Indian Stamp Act, 1899). It is the same in Punjab and Chandigarh. For UPI, bank transfer or cheque, the payment record is the proof and a stamp is not usually asked for.
