Affidavits
83 documentsAn affidavit is a written statement of fact that you sign and swear to be true — usually before a Notary Public — so that a bank, a government office, a court or another person can rely on it without hearing from you directly. People use one to correct a name or address on a record, support a certificate application, back a bank or loan claim, or place a fact on record, such as who a property’s legal heirs are, that no other document states.
Most of the 83 affidavits below are written for Punjab and Chandigarh, and each document’s own page states its stamp duty and notarisation position directly — typically a nominal stamp value, sworn before a notary, and not something the Sub-Registrar’s office registers. A few work differently: some self-declarations are accepted with a plain signature instead of a notarised oath, and four are written specifically for Himachal Pradesh. Check the exact position on the document’s own page before you buy stamp paper.
Name, identity and address
Most of these reconcile a name, spelling or date of birth that reads differently across your own papers — a maiden name against a married one, a spelling that drifted between a birth certificate and Aadhaar, a passport that doesn’t match a marksheet, or a minor’s name a parent must swear to on the child’s behalf. A few carry the change further, such as publishing a new name in the Gazette of India, registering a birth years late because it was never recorded on time, or vouching for your character where an office wants a sworn declaration rather than a document.

Income, residence and category certificates
Most of these support a certificate application at the Tehsildar, SDM or Deputy Commissioner’s office — income, domicile, EWS, BC/SC caste status, or residence in a rural or border-area village — where the form itself asks for a sworn affidavit alongside your other proof. The rest prove where you live for a bank or school.

Licences and utility connections
These affidavits go with an application to a licensing or utility authority: a fresh or renewed arms licence, or a duplicate driving licence where no birth record exists to prove your date of birth. The rest move an electricity, gas, or water and sewer connection into a new name after a death, a sale, a rental, or another household member taking it over — including a tubewell’s electricity connection changing hands on a farm.

Pensions and ration card
One supports an Old Age or Widow Pension application through Punjab’s Sewa Kendra network or Chandigarh’s Social Welfare Department. The other goes with a ration card application to add a family member born or married in, or remove one who has died, married out, or moved away.
Lost documents and indemnity bonds
A general indemnity bond is the broader promise a bank, company or society asks for before it acts on your word alone — releasing a fixed deposit without the original receipt, or issuing a duplicate of something lost. The lost document affidavit is the narrower, paired version written specifically for a lost or destroyed passport or a company share certificate, and the same pattern for a lost Registration Certificate or insurance policy.

Marriage, marital status and passport
These cover a marriage, or its absence, at every stage — the affidavit each party swears alongside a Special Marriage Act notice before a court marriage, a general statement confirming an existing marriage for a bank or school, a sworn statement that a spouse-visa marriage is genuine and not one of convenience, or a sworn statement that you are unmarried for a registration, visa or adoption case. Two are written specifically for the Passport Seva process: the standard Annexure D/F/I affidavit, and the separate one for adding a spouse’s name to your passport.

Property records and mutation
These correct or complete what a property record already says, rather than move ownership from one person to another — mutating a Chandigarh Estate Office property into your name after a purchase, gift or inheritance, or fixing a spelling that doesn’t match across documents naming the same person. The third swears and indemnifies a lost original title deed, so a bank, buyer’s advocate or Tehsildar will proceed without it.

Buying, selling and transferring property
These go with an active sale or transfer: confirming how the agreed price was paid, indemnifying a buyer if registration is delayed beyond the four months the Registration Act allows, or a seller’s sworn promise that nothing is charged against the property. Two are specific to a development authority’s own process — the liability affidavit every Chandigarh Estate Office transferee files as Annexure-2, and the title affidavit Punjab’s development authorities such as GMADA and GLADA ask a seller for.

Home loans, mortgage and guarantors
These support a home loan or loan-against-property file for the lender, not the Sub-Registrar — a borrower’s sworn title and income declarations, or a guarantor’s KYC before being accepted as surety. Two cover what happens when something changes mid-loan: a co-borrower’s private indemnity dividing repayment between themselves, and an heir’s undertaking after a borrower’s death that stops short of making the heir personally liable for the whole debt.

Himachal Pradesh property affidavits
Four affidavits written specifically for Himachal Pradesh, not Punjab or Chandigarh. Three go with a Collector’s permission under section 118 of the Himachal Pradesh Tenancy and Land Reforms Act, 1972, when a non-agriculturist buys agricultural land — the buyer’s, the transferor’s and a co-sharer’s sworn statements — and the fourth registers a house as a homestay under the state’s 2025 Home Stay Rules.

Education and study abroad
Two support an Indian Board, University or School record — a duplicate marksheet or certificate after the original is lost, or a Migration Certificate application when moving between institutions. The other six back a study visa application abroad or a related student circumstance: a sponsor’s financial undertaking, a parent or relative’s sponsorship affidavit, a sworn statement of the family relationship between sponsor and student, a parent’s separate declaration of support, an anti-ragging undertaking a college asks of both student and parent, and an explanation of a gap year in the student’s record.

NRI affidavits
Three sworn statements for people living outside India: proof that a pensioner abroad is still alive, for a pension that depends on it; a declaration confirming a marriage was registered, for a couple who later need it recognised abroad; and a declaration under FEMA that an NRI or OCI buying property here is doing so within what the law allows them to hold.

Business and shop registration
These support registering a business, not running one already registered — a shop or commercial establishment under the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, a municipal trade licence for a trade the law treats as needing one, such as an eatery using fire, or a bank’s or GST authority’s proof that a business is a sole proprietorship with no partner or separate legal existence.
- Shop & Establishment AffidavitSupports registering a shop or commercial establishment with the local authority.FreeOpen
- Proprietorship DeclarationSworn declaration that a business is owned by one individual alone.FreeOpen

Death, succession and inheritance
Most of these follow a death — naming legal heirs for a Punjab virasat intkal mutation, confirming no other heir is known or that an heir claims no share, registering a death recorded more than thirty days late, or releasing a deceased’s bank balance to heirs below the bank’s own threshold without a succession certificate. The other two apply while everyone is alive: a donor’s declaration supporting a gift, and a will’s attesting witness’s later declaration of what they saw at signing.

Notices, disputes and RTI
A general affidavit for supporting a petition or proceeding before a court, tribunal or government authority in Punjab or Chandigarh, and the RTI second appeal or section 18 complaint filed with the State or Central Information Commission after a first appeal is decided against you or goes unanswered.
Power of attorney
The sworn confirmation Chandigarh’s Estate Office wants, as its own Annexure-11, that a general, special or sub power of attorney used to execute a deed is genuine and still in force when the attorney-holder signs on somebody else’s behalf.
Renting a home
A landlord’s undertaking fixing the scope, timeline and cost of repair work both sides have already agreed is needed, so it isn’t later read as an automatic rent waiver. A tenant’s indemnity is the pair — limited to a defined risk, such as damage or a temporary-possession condition, rather than an open-ended promise to cover anything that goes wrong.
Vehicle affidavits
Two sworn statements for a car or bike changing hands or changing owner’s hands as a gift: one supporting the transfer of the Registration Certificate at the RTO after a sale, gift or inheritance, and the fuller donor-facing affidavit specifically for a gift.
Insurance affidavits
A sworn affidavit supporting a property or fire insurance claim, stating the facts of the loss and that the claim is not fraudulent or duplicate, and a declaration changing the nominee named on an insurance policy.
